Triphala: Ayurvedic Daily Tonic
Triphala is one of the most commonly used herbal blends in Ayurvedic medicine and I love it because it is simply put, it is a cure for so many ailments. The three fruits contained in Triphala; Haritaki, Amalaki and Bibhitaki, each correspond to one of the three humors or doshas of Indian Ayurvedic medicine. According to Ayurvedic theory, the body is composed of three doshas which include Vata or “wind,” which corresponds to the mind and nervous system, pitta or “fire,” which is responsible for metabolic transformations including the digestion and assimilation of food, and Kapha or “water” or “mucus,” is the humor responsible for all anabolic or building functions, such as the development of muscle and bone tissue. Each of the three herbal fruits in the Triphala blend promotes internal cleansing and removes toxins and all together, it acts as a total body tonic for digestion and assimilation. Triphala hels to reduce cholesterol, improve circulation, reduce high blood pressure, improve liver function, and is also anti-inflammatory and anti-viral. Triphala also has compounds called anthroquinones which help stimulate bile flow and GI peristalsis. In addition, Triphala has high vitamin C content, contains omega 6 and other important nutrients, making it a perfect tonic. Triphala is usually taken as a powder, by stirring in two or three grams of the powder with warm water and drinking it each evening or divided into three doses throughout the day. Those who don’t love the taste can try it in tablet or capsule form. I enjoy a glass of water, honey and triphala every morning on an empty stomach and won’t go one day without it. I know that triphala is what keeps me healthy through the seasons and I recommend it to all!
