Clear Skin, Clear Conscience
You want clear skin. You want to get rid of acne. But you don’t really want to turn to Accutane or Retin-A. Maybe you’re afraid of rubbing harsh chemicals on your face. Maybe you’re wary of animal testing. Maybe you’re against mass production and are concerned about child labor in developing countries (where most skin care products are made).
In any case, you know that if you make your own clear skin products on your own, from all natural, farm grown or free trade ingredients, then you’ll be one step ahead, skin care-wise, and guilt free.
Follow these easy-to-make recipes to clear up skin problems:
1. For dry skin: Mix together one cup of sugar with 1/3 cup of olive oil. Store in an air-tight container and use about one tablespoon’s worth each night in the shower to smooth out rough patches of skin. This works great on elbows, knees, feet, shoulders, and other areas prone to dryness.
2. For oily skin: Mix a tablespoon of salt with a tablespoon of lemon juice and use as a scrub over oily skin. This is particularly good over the face’s T-zone—the forehead, nose, and chin.
3. For tired feet: Mix equal parts sugar and honey, and then add a dash of peppermint oil. Scrub onto tired feet, rinse, and then add a thin layer of peppermint oil to clean feet. (In the first mixture, you can use a teaspoon of peppermint liquor instead or in addition to the peppermint oil.)
4. For acne: Mix together baking soda and water until it forms a paste. Rub into skin, leave for a few minutes, and then rinse off. Some skin can tolerate an overnight treatment, but test a small portion for a night before covering a larger portion of the face. This mixture also works great to help clear back acne.
